World Ozone Day, 2018 was observed by the Eco Club, GJTC by organising a special lecture and pledge making programme at the 3rd Semester Room at 2:00 PM today. The programme was attended by the Eco Club members / 5th Semester students.

On the invitation of the Chairperson Lalmalsawmi, Green Leader, the resource person Lalngaihawma, Assistant Professor & Green Teacher speaks on the characteristics, role and significance of Ozone layer in the atmosphere. He said, “The total mass of Ozone in the atmosphere is about 3 billion metric tons in volume. Though, it seems to be abundantly present, it comprises only 0.00006% of the atmosphere. However, Ozone are an important gas as they absorb ultraviolet rays between 310 to 200 nanometer wavelength and thus preventing the harmful radiations from entering the earth’s atmosphere. Hence, the depletion of Ozone layer is a matter of concern for human kind.”

The speaker informed the audience that Ozone depletion was first identified in 1970 and its continual degradation has been a crucial factor leading to changes in the world’s environment and climate change. The production and emissions of Chlroflouro Carbons (CFCs) leads to Ozone depletion and these CFCs are produced from vehicle emissions, industrial processes, refrigerants, aerosols, etc.

The depletion of Ozone layer has a harmful effects on humans and all living beings. Humans are affected with skin cancer, deterioration of immune system, accelerated aging of skin, difficulties in breathing, chest pain, throat irritation, etc. Therefore, to contain further depletion and to restore Ozone in the atmosphere, the speaker advocates the use of recycled products, use of public transports system and by spreading awareness regarding the depletion as well as the need for the restoration of Ozone layer.

The Green Teacher Rebecca Khiangte, Associate Professor administered pledge making to preserve and protect the environment and to spread awareness regarding Ozone depletion and restoration of Ozone.
